Rex Tillerson 'used email alias' at Exxon to talk climate change

In a letter to the judge on the case Monday, the Attorney General's Office said it discovered that former Exxon Chairman and CEO (and current Secretary of State) Rex Tillerson used an e-mail alias of "Wayne Tracker" to communicate with other Exxon executives.

"Mr. Tillerson, now the USA secretary of state, used the pseudonym "Wayne Tracker" from at least 2008 to 2015, according to the attorney general".

A State Department spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter.

In addition to the email alias used by Tillerson, Schneiderman's office said that it has identified 34 other email accounts assigned to top executives, board members and their assistants that had not been disclosed by Exxon.

Company Alan Jeffers added that the account was "mostly used while he [Tillerson] was traveling to ensure he'd see an item in a secure and timely way without having to sort through his regular email inbox, which could contain many items". Wayne is Tillerson's middle name and "Tracker" is likely a reference to his past involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. It involves claims that Exxon Mobil made "false, deceptive, or misleading statements about climate change and the impact it may have on its bottom line", according to a February 5, 2016 letter by the New York Attorney General to supporters.

Exxon denied trying to hide anything.

It is not unheard of for executives to maintain alias email accounts for inner circle communications. The filing comes in a protracted legal dispute in which Exxon seeks to derail probes by NY and MA into whether the company misled investors for years about the possible impact of climate change on its business.

For its part, Exxon Mobil said in its statement the company "has been responsive ... and has provided more than 2.5 million pages of documents".

After a four-decade career at the company, Tillerson, 64, left this year to become President Trump's secretary of state.

The investigations are also the subject of a dispute in Washington, where House Republicans are seeking to derail the state probes on the grounds that they seek to silence scientists who disagree with the widely accepted theory that climate change is caused by humans.

"It could be misleading to not tell the attorney general the actual owner of that email address", said Cohen, who isn't involved in the dispute.
