Amazon adds Alexa to its iOS shopping app

New Alexa Models Will Function As Phones And Intercoms

That all changes today, as Amazon is putting Alexa on iOS.

Thus far, Alexa has been exclusive to Amazon's own lineup of devices, like the Echo or the Fire TV Stick. This will allow you to add Skills, sign into services that you use (such as to play music), and configure Alexa to your liking. Notably, Amazon has a larger library of smart home products that can be controlled through its digital assistant than Apple does, according to ARS Technica - even though there is some overlap between the two. So, it looks like those who want a standalone Alexa experience will still have to shell out for an Echo device.

You'll also be able to use Alexa within the app to start playing music from Amazon Music Unlimited, Prime Music, or songs you've purchased, as well as open Kindle books, both of which present a new built-in media player.

Amazon said Alexa in the Amazon app supports "smart home capabilities". There are a lot of things that you can control Siri with that you can control Alexa with and vice-versa.

Much like Siri, users can use Alexa to ask any number of questions about historical figures, events, music, sports and more. You do not even have to be asking Alexa about Amazon shopping or products either, even if you are inside of the Amazon app. You also need to keep the main Alexa app installed in order to manage Alexa on all your devices.

Amazon said the feature began rolling out today, and should be available to all users within the U.S. by sometime next week.

However, we doubt that you'll have access to Echo-exclusive promotions that Amazon runs from time to time. And next year, we should see a native Alexa app pre-installed on the Moto Z series.
