Venezuela rallies past Italy 4-3 to reach 2nd round of WBC

The World Baseball Classic is on to the second round, and both the United States and Venezuela still are in the running ... for now. Francisco Rodriguez gave up Alex Liddi's leadoff homer in the bottom half before getting three straight groundouts for the save, eliminating Italy. Mexico was set to advance, as it was informed that if it won by two, it would face Italy in a tiebreaker game, with the victor advancing to the next round of the tournament.

The Venezuelans advanced despite giving up 35 runs in the first round, the third-highest mark in the history of the tournament.

Shots fired! Two days after Mexico got knocked out of the World Baseball Classic following an error on the part of tournament officials with regards to a first-round tiebreaker, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez vowed that he'll never again play in the WBC and had some harsh words for its organizers. The game was ended after eight innings because of the 10-run rule. Chris Roberson drove in two runs for Mexico, which lost its first two games. Jair Jurrjens picked up the win after striking out five batters and holding Israel to one run and five hits over six innings. So who's to say he'd be playing anyway?

While that seems simple in theory to understand (you take the amount of runs scored and divide it by innings), Mexico's 10-9 loss to Italy on Saturday night messed everything up.

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda struck out seven in 3⅔ innings, and the only hit he gave up was a home run by Albert Pujols in a 3-1 win over the crosstown rival Angels.
