Chicago getting 1st significant snowfall since December

Snow here’s the latest forecast Commuters brave one of Chicago's most notorious snowstorms during the Blizzard of 2011

As the wind pattern has become more northwesterly, snow showers have weakened over northeast IL with the target of heavier snow shifting into northwest IN where Lake-effect snow Warnings and Advisories have been continued overnight into Wednesday morning. The lake-effect warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday in Cook, DuPage and Lake counties.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning means significant amounts of lake effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or impossible. Around three to six inches of snow are expected on the ground in most of the Chicago area by 3 p.m. Monday. The snow is expected to develop Tuesday evening and continue overnight into Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to drop 5 to 9 inches of snow across northeastern IL. Snow totals can vary significantly over short distances based on lake effect snow. Seven people were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, while 23 people refused medical attention. More than a thousand flights have already been canceled. Delays at both airports were averaging less than 15 minutes. In the present situation, however, northeast winds are directing snow across the Chicago area, with snow working southward into Tuesday morning, then finally arriving in northwest Indiana.

Snow accumulations are likely to be in the five to 10 inch range.

While Chicago braced for its first snowfall in months, larger snowstorms were expected on the East Coast.
