'We Are Finding New Ones Every Day:' ISIS Mass Graves Unearthed

Daesh soldiers stand in front of people as they dig their own graves

During a press conference in Baghdad Sunday, Brett McGurk, the special United States presidential envoy for the global coalition against ISIS said the Iraqi army is now in control of the last road leading out of Mosul.

Iraqi forces recaptured a third of west Mosul and trapped Islamic State group fighters inside as they made further gains in their battle to retake the city, officials said on Sunday.

Capturing the Iron Bridge would mean Iraqi forces control three of the five bridges spanning the Tigris River between eastern and western Mosul, all which have been damaged by ISIL and US-led air strikes.

Iraqi security forces guard the destroyed Mosque of the prophet Younis, or Jonah, in Mosul, Iraq, Saturday, March 11, 2017.

"The battle is not easy... we are fighting an irregular enemy who hides among the citizens and uses tactics of booby-trapping, explosions and suicide bombers", Brigadier General Yahya Rasool said.

"It has begun to lose command and control", Maan al-Saadi, commander of the Counter Terrorism Service (CTS), told reporters. According to a new report a new Sunni insurgency is taking root in Iraq as the USA -led coalition continues to weaken the Islamic State's territorial strongholds, particularly in Mosul.

The JOC also said forces from the Rapid Response Division, another special forces unit, and the federal police were also attacking the Bab al-Toub area on the edge of Mosul's Old City.

The operation is part of a larger military offensive to liberate Mosul from IS, which overran the city in 2014.

The old city remains one of ISIL's last strongholds, but the Islamic militants appear to be on the brink of losing their last major urban base in Iraq.

More than 200,000 Mosul residents have been displaced since the start of the campaign in October, of which more than 65,000 fled their homes in the past two weeks alone.

Numerous mass graves date back to ISIS's initial occupation of territory in Iraq near major cities like Tikrit, Sinjar, and Mosul.

As an array of forces dismantle Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliphate across Iraq and Syria, more evidence is emerging of the war crimes committed by the Sunni Islamist militants, who targeted Shi'ite Muslims and religious minorities as well as opponents from their own sect.
