Search for Madeleine McCann extended by six months after Home Office grant

Kate and Gerry McCann

The funding reignites Operation Grange, launched in May 2011 after the girl went missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal, according to the International Business Times.

RadarOnline.com can reveal that police are reportedly zeroing in on a new suspect in the nearly-decade-old disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann.

The initial Portuguese investigation into Madeleine's disappearance fell into disrepute after a series of mistakes were made in the early hours of the investigation, including an officer dusting the bedroom window's exterior shutter for fingerprints without wearing gloves or any other protective clothing. The case drew worldwide attention when the girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were named as suspects by officials in Portugal four months after the disappearance, but police dropped charges in July 2008 because of insufficient evidence.

The man is understood to have given a witness statement two days after Madeleine, from Rothley in Leicestershire, vanished.

Rumours are rife that police are honing in on a former worker at the Ocean Club resort where the McCanns were residing. "British officers are convinced he knows more than he was previously saying and are very keen to question him", a source told the paper.

"They are not suggesting he stole Maddie but he may know people who could have been involved after a burglary went wrong".

Met Police said: "The investigation is ongoing".

Several people have been arrested since 2007 in connection to the case.

Intelligence agencies have been cooperating to find the "person of interest", who detectives believe could help solve this case.

Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine's parents, have promised that they will never give up hope in finding their daughter.
