Preet Bharara Likens Getting Fired to Shutdown of Anti-Corruption Commission

Attorney General Jeff Sessions holds a meeting with the heads of federal law enforcement components at the Department of Justice in Washington. Sessions had two conversations with the Russian ambassador to the Unit

When a new or acting US attorney general is nominated, Senate tradition requires the two home state Senators to sign what's called a blue slip. He was one of 46 Obama administration holdovers who were asked to resign by the Justice Department on Friday.

The marching order was met with shock by Bharara's office since Trump had past year in November asked him to stay on under his administration. What is remarkable is for one of those political appointees to refuse to resign, and force the president to fire him. He revealed on Saturday that the Trump administration fired him, after he refused a resignation order from the Department of Justice.

There is growing speculation among former prosecutors and others in the legal community that Bharara's replacement will be Marc Mukasey, a defense lawyer whose father served as attorney general under Republican President George W. Bush.

Bharara and 45 other United States prosecutors appointed by former President Barack Obama had been asked by the Trump administration to resign immediately.

On Saturday afternoon, Bharara wrote on his personal Twitter account, which he set up eight days ago: "I did not resign". It's also possible that I could, at any moment, spontaneously burst into flames.

Peter Neronha, who had served since 2009 as US attorney for Rhode Island, said even before Friday he had been preparing for his eventual departure and had written a resignation statement to be released upon his exit.

Why did Bahara tweet yesterday, "By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like"? But Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says there are no signs of progress yet. So it was a bit surprising to find out that the president tasked the Attorney General Jeff Sessions with ordering 46 US attorneys to submit letters of resignation immediately.

Although it is unclear what Bharara meant in his tweet, the White House insists that Bharara's dismissal was a standard move by the new administration.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), who represents the state in which Bharara is based, said he was "caught off guard" by the announcement and that Bharara will be "sorely missed" in NY.

Giving an explanation for the call, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the "president reached out to Preet Bharara on Thursday to thank him for his service and to wish him good luck".

Bharara said he had met with then president-elect Trump in November when he had assured him he would stay on in his capacity as us attorney.

Outside of public corruption, Bharara was perhaps best known for overseeing a wave of cases focused on insider trading. Bharara's office declined to comment. "And certainly, there's a lot of questions coming up as to whether Mr. Trump is - President Trump is concerned about the jurisdiction of this US attorney and whether that might affect his future".

After of a week of the liberal media claiming President Donald Trump was being misled by conservative media, ABC's David Wright continued the charge by insinuating the President was listening to Fox News for governing advice.
