New Footage Challenges The Police Narrative In Michael Brown Case

The new clip challenges the police's account of the events that unfolded prior to Brown's death

Almost three years after Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, a filmmaker has released previously unseen surveillance video that not just challenges the official narrative about the African-American teen's death at the hands of a white officer, but also reaffirms what the black community had been claiming since the tragic incident.

Attorneys representing the Ferguson Market and Liquor store where Michael Brown was last seen before his death have spoken out against new footage that has sparked protests in the city once again. Video was released of Brown shoving the clerk in the market and the clerk reported a robbery to the police.

Darren Wilson, a white officer, encountered Brown and fatally shot him in an altercation in which events have been widely disputed. Brown is then seen leaving the store with the sack but turns around to hand the cigarillos back before exiting.

Pollock's video shows the black 18-year-old's altercation with store employees might have been a misunderstanding linked to a possible drug transactions he previously had that day with store employees on August 9, 2014.

"Don't tell me that he stole from the store if they handed him a bag [of cigarillos] that they created themselves. anybody who sees this with their eyes can see what's happening", Pollock said.

The filmmaker theorizes that police released only the later video - showing Brown returning to the store, and becoming angry and violent when the cigarillos he had left there were not returned to him - to build the case that Brown was unpredictably violent and support Officer Wilson's account that Brown turned and charged him.

He said Pollock's conclusions are entirely false and that the video doesn't change what happened.

Brown, who was 18, was fatally shot minutes later by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. As law enforcement officials and media outlets have done in other prominent cases involving black victims of police or vigilante violence, activists said they believe police deliberately sought to tarnish the slain teen's name ahead of a grand jury decision not to charge Wilson with any crime. Brown then has an arguement with the clerk and throws a bag onto the counter.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch was holding a Monday afternoon news conference to address video footage in the documentary.

According to the New York Times, Pollock learned of the additional video after reading a lengthy report by the St. Louis County Police Department that made a brief mention about Brown's visit to the store earlier that morning. "The reason he gave it back is he was walking out the door with unpaid merchandise and they wanted it back", he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Jay Kanzler, a lawyer for the convenience store says the documentary doesn't stay true to the facts. That trial is set to begin next year.
