Commonwealth Games: Durban will not host in 2022

Durban Has Lost 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said Durban, which had hoped to be the first African city to host the Games, had failed to meet the promises contained in its bid and the search for a replacement host was now on.

"This is a huge disappointment for us and for the whole African continent", he told Reuters.

Durban 2022 would have been the first staging of the Commonwealth Games in Africa. It is already bidding to host the games in 2026.

The bid was believed to have been withdrawn because of financial constraints.

"The Commonwealth Games Federation is looking for an alternative to Durban‚" he wrote.

"I am very confident that the city will be able to cope with the demands of holding the games then".

"We have given it our best shot, but we can not live beyond our means".

A decision on finding a new host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is a matter of urgency says the head of the New Zealand Olympic Committee Kereyn Smith.

Durban was awarded the Games in 2015, after preferred option Edmonton, in Canada, pulled out after local opposition.

According to industry news site Beyond The Games‚ CGF president Louise Martin travelled to Pretoria last week in a last-minute attempt to convince the South African government to put up financial backings for the Games - which were expected to cost in the region of R8-billion.

Gideon Sam, the president of the South African Olympic committee and a Commonwealth Games Federation vice-president, says Durban's revised budget and hosting proposal was rejected by the CGF, who chose to look for another city.

Mayor Joe Anderson has written to sports minister Tracey Crouch to express the city's interest.

"It does not look like we will find each other", he said.
