Court Ousts South Korean President Park Geun-hye

Police guard the Constitutional Court in Seoul on Thursday ahead of the final ruling Friday in President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment trial

10 March: Constitutional Court upholds Parliament's vote to impeach Ms Park, removing her from office.

"While not only Lotte but all other Korean companies are suffering from canceled business meetings and contracts, Korea has little choice but to wait until (US President) Trump and (China President) Xi Jinping come up with a deal over the issue, during their summit possibly in April", he said.

Opponents of South Korea's ousted leader, Park Geun-hye rallied in the capital, Seoul, on Saturday to demand that she be arrested, a day after she was thrown out of office over a corruption scandal involving the country's conglomerates.

South Korea must hold a presidential election within 60 days and Moon, a former Democratic Party leader narrowly beaten by Park in 2012, has always been leading the polls. Although she has apologized to the people of South Korea several times, she has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

A leftish government might well re-open the industrial complex just inside North Korea, but with South Korean firms and managers.

Both Kim and Choi expressed concern that a potential future left-wing government may reverse the decision to deploy the US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), a defensive missile system. More than 300 people, majority high school students, died when the ferry sank. "Even in politics, the uncertainty lingers as a new election is to be held".

"The court's ruling shows that in any circumstance Korea's democracy is still solid, including the president's impeachment", Lee Won-jae, a prominent economist and political commentator, says in an email from Seoul.

The opposition has been gathering for weeks calling for her ouster and now demands she now face criminal charges and arrest. Two people believed to be pro-Park died. Let's start things off at the venue that made the hotly anticipated announcement that removed Park Geun-hye from the top office - the Constitutional Court.

25 Oct, 2016: Ms Park makes her first public apology for giving Ms Choi access to draft speeches during the first months of her presidency. Park was accused of bribery and abuse of power by allegedly conspiring with her friend, Choi Soon-sil, a private citizen, to extort money from businesses.

25 Feb, 2013: Ms Park is sworn in as the first female president of South Korea.

The court said she "continuously" violated the law and constitution throughout her term.

"It was thought in one stage that the ruling would mean she would have to leave immediately but that doesn't seem to be the case".

Outside South Korea's Constitutional Court Friday morning, thousands of South Koreans crammed onto the street to await the ruling.

But Park has avoided a direct investigation thanks to a law that gives a sitting president immunity from prosecution for most of alleged crimes.
