Female Marine 'disgusted' to see photos online

The existence of the shared drive was first reported through the website Reveal, in conjunction with the War Horse military news website.

"It would be hilarious if one of these Federal Bureau of Investigation or [Naval Criminal Investigative Service] f***s found their wife on here", one member commented.

The Marines' top commander, General Robert Neller, weighed in with a videotaped rebuke on Tuesday, calling the disclosures an "embarrassment" to the corps. "As a Marine Corps veteran, I am disheartened and disgusted with this scandal", she told a news conference. Recent reports have indicated that active-duty Marines who participated in the group could face felony charges.

Meanwhile, a former Marine, Erin Kirk-Cuomo, said female service members have been telling their superiors about such websites for more than a decade.

On Friday, the veterans news site Task & Purpose reported that a new private Facebook group called Marines United 2.0 had popped up, seemingly in defiance of the ongoing investigations under way.

I don't know what group or demographic in the Marine Corps is involved in this.

"I can tell you that this exact behavior leads to the normalization of sexual harassment and even sexual violence", said Erika Butner, 23, who served in the Marines for four years before leaving the service last June. "It's become so normalized in the military that women just have to deal with it alone", she added.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand sent a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain and U.S. Sen.

Neller conceded that Corps officials have not responded to similar problems in the past, and acknowledged he has not talked to Marines about behavior on social media when discussing other potentially self-destructive acts, such as alcohol abuse. Only current and former members are able to search the group. However, it appears that a public case is all but inevitable: Two victims of the scandal, one an active duty Marine, have met with high-profile attorney Gloria Allred to explore legal options. Some members of the Facebook group have directed others to new pages that were created to share the images.

"I was going to go to Norway this weekend, see a bunch of Marines above the Arctic Circle up there training and do all this stuff that I think the great, great majority of us came into the Marine Corp to do, travel, challenging things, get ready to go represent our nation". Just the Tip, of the Spear was subject of multiple news stories in 2013 and 2014 by the Marine Corps Times and Task and goal.

Those posting sometimes provide names and other details of women, including where they are stationed, and lewd comments accompany many posts.

"I felt like my privacy had been taken away from me", Wayne said. "Guys stop thinking with your d- and girls stop metaphorically burning down cities for attention".

The US Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has launched a probe into the allegations after a report by a US-based non-profit news organisation uncovered a "secret" Facebook group - which has several Marines as members - that posted naked pictures of US service women.
