Elon Musk offers to fix Australian power network in 100 days

Tesla Model X

Musk said to launch a 100MWh system in 100 days would cost $33.2m plus shipping, taxes and installation costs, according to The Advertiser.

After Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes asked Rive and Musk how serious they are, proposing to expedite the financial and political process, Musk made the offer to establish the system in just over three months, or it's free.

Cannon-Brookes then tweeted to Musk asking him if he could really make this happen if the funds were available and the politics were sorted out. Although considering the heat wave now plaguing the state, even Musk's aggressive timetable won't be fast enough.

Cannon-Brookes had tweeted a link to an Australian news report that cited Tesla executive Lyndon Rive as saying he would "commit" to installing the megawatt-hours of batteries needed to prevent the recent blackouts in South Australia.

He also claimed the company could also supply Victoria with batteries which would help ameliorate the closure of Hazelwood power plant, which may cause more frequent blackouts along the eastern seaboard.

Tesla has been spruiking its Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 battery products in Australia this week.

The state of South Australia is the most dependent on renewable energy sources - about 40% power generation can be attributed to solar, wind and other green sources. He has promised that he can mend ongoing power troubles in the state of South Australia within 100 days.

Batteries have been touted as a way to solve renewable energy's intermittency problem.

Given the progress in Tesla's new Gigafactory in Nevada, Rive believes the feat could be achieved in 100 days. The EV firm completed the project within just 90 days, installing an 80 megawatt-hour grid-scale battery farm in Southern California. The project includes a 13-megawatt solar farm and a 52-megawatt-hour battery installation, reported The Verge.
