Russian Federation gives 'Beauty and the Beast' remake 16+ rating over 'gay moment'

Josh Gad and Luke Evans on the'Inclusiveness of Beauty and the Beast's Gay Character

Last week ruling party MP Vitaly Milonov called for a ban, referring to the film's content as "perverted sexual relations" that would be in direct opposition to a Russian law that cracks down on "gay propaganda against minors".

Bill Condon tells Attitude about Beauty and the Beast's "short but explicitly gay scene", describing Disney as "brave" for agreeing to this "watershed moment" in "representing same-sex attraction".

Amid the backlash, a drive-in theater in Alabama has said it will not screen the Beauty and the Beast remake.

That's the equivalent to Rated R movies in the US which, in reference to a Disney live-action remake, seems unusual.

"It's somebody who's just realising that he has these feelings", he said. It sure is subtle.

The family movie, starring Emma Watson, will be given the restricted certificate to prevent children from watching because of the studio's first "exclusively gay moment" involving a character played by Josh Gad.

Gad's LeFou plays up every gay stereotype you can think of: comically (and lazily) effeminate, with a huge crush and pre-occupation with a "jock" straight guy. There is one other who ends up dressed as a woman; that gives the character a big smile. However, Gad himself responded to it by telling People Magazine that Lefou and his ultimate fate are another part of the film's "Never judging a book by its cover" message. If true, that calculation is disturbing and misleading.

Whatever the future holds for making LGBTQ characters and their orientation a more important and open part of Disney films, Beauty and the Beast will open the door on March 17. It should be seen and judged for that, not by some contrived PR-stunt.
