Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau's Facebook post sparks debate

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau wants women to celebrate men on International Women's Day

"As we mark International Women's Day, let's celebrate the boys and men in our lives who encourage us to be who we truly are, who treat girls & women with respect", Sophie Gregoire Trudeau wrote on her Instagram account.

Gregoire Trudeau posted an image of herself holding hands with her husband, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"International women's day is a day to celebrate intersectional feminism and acknowledge the strides women have taken for equality while simultaneously acknowledging the active misogyny women and women identified individuals encounter on a daily basis".

Some people seemed to side with Grégoire Trudeau in the comments, giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Indeed, it was through a joint Canada-U.S. initiative to promote and foster women in business, reportedly the idea of Trudeau chief of staff Katie Telford, that observers say enabled the federal Liberal government to connect with a White House that few were convinced would listen. And with the Trump administration offering the ideal backdrop against which Justin Trudeau's feminism can really shine, why not seize the opportunity to show that off, even on International Women's Day?

"I think I'll be taking photos with my daughters, female friends and colleagues instead".

Her post received 11,000 likes and 2,300 "hearts" - more than the angry and crying face emojis that can also be used to react to posts on the social network. "Really, I expected more", wrote one Instagram user. "I can get back to celebrating how wonderful men are the other 364 days..."

Gregoire said she will speak more on this at International Women's Day events on Wednesday.

"Well, now we're having a conversation!" she wrote. Thanks to everyone for your feedback and pics!

The prime minister is also urging men and Canada's youth to play their role in protecting women's rights and to also join the fight for gender equality. "This is about recognizing that we should be allies on this journey", she said.

In his video, which packs a lot into less than two minutes, Trudeau declares he and wife, Sophie, "are feminists" and stresses how they're raising their children "to believe that an equal world is a better and more powerful world".
