Dwayne Allen being traded to Patriots

Patriots trade for Colts TE Dwayne Allen

The Patriots pulled off a trade with the Colts on Wednesday that will send tight end Dwayne Allen to New England. He had 406 yards and six touchdowns in 2016.

After the Indianapolis Colts made a decision to bring back tight end Jack Doyle on a long-term deal Tuesday night, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Colts' other tight end Dwayne Allen.

Allen, an effective blocker and big-bodied redzone target, has three years and just over $17 million remaining on his contract. He has 126 career receptions for 1,451 yards and 19 touchdowns. But on the other hand, it looks like a good trade for the Patriots because Bill Belichick is a master at getting the most out of his players.

No sooner did the Indianapolis Colts lock up one tight end than they chose to part ways with another.

Bennett didn't exactly light up the stat sheet for the Patriots, catching 55 passes for 701 yards with seven touchdowns, but he played through numerous painful injuries and was valuable insurance when Rob Gronkowski went out with a back injury. Bennett arrived in New England with one year left on his contract after the Patriots pulled off a trade with the Bears in March 2016.

Rob Gronkowski is returning from back surgery and Matt Lengel will return to provide depth at the tight end position. As long as Josh McDaniels is the offensive coordinator in New England, he'll want to use his two tight end sets to help make things easier for quarterback Tom Brady in the passing game.

In five seasons, Allen has sprinkled flashes of brilliances with periods of mediocrity.

The Patriots will owe Allen $5 million in 2017, $5 million in 2018 and $7.4 million in 2019, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald.
