China urges U.S. and North Korea to avert 'head-on collision'

North Korea Launches Projectile From Its Long-Range Missile Facility

The UN Security Council earlier strongly condemned the launch of missiles saying North Korea had gravely violated its worldwide obligations, which risked destabilising the region.

The United States and Japan on Monday requested an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to discuss North Korea's latest ballistic missile launches.

The Yomiuri Shimbun Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump that the North Korean threat has "entered a new stage", in a telephone conversation regarding Pyongyang's ballistic missile launches the previous day.

"Now that the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces again kicked off the risky nuclear war drills against [North Korea] at its doorstep, our army will counter them with the toughest counteractions", a North Korean military spokesman said a day after the maneuvers.

In February China raised objections about the U.S.Terminal High Altitude Defense System (THAAD), created to protect South Korea from North Korean missile attacks, over concerns that the radar could penetrate China's border.

The measures include the planned deployment to South Korea of a missile defense system called Thaad, which has infuriated China, the North's key diplomatic ally and crucial to efforts to persuade it to change its ways.

The North's state media on Tuesday said leader Kim Jong Un supervised a ballistic rocket launching drill, a likely reference to the four launches reported by Seoul and Tokyo. Chinese authorities said the stores were closed over fire safety issues, but the move comes just days after the Xinhua state news agency warned of consequences for Lotte over its involvement in the deal.

In February the dictator was accused of having his estranged half brother Kim Jong-nam murdered at Kuala Lumpur airport in North Korea's despot Kim Malaysia.

The US Pacific Command said Monday that the Americans had begun deploying the THAAD system to South Korea, which is created to defend the US ally from a North Korean attack.

U.S. Defense Department officials said the missile launch posed no threat to North America.

Although it is unlikely that the missiles launched represent a significant advancement in North Korea's missile technology, the fact that four were launched and three of them reached Japan's EEZ marks a significant increase in tension between North Korea and its neighbours.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer condemned the launches that afternoon, arguing they are "consistent with North Korea's long history of provocative behavior".

"He said he wanted us to trust him and the United States 100 percent", Abe added.
