Homes damaged as severe storms, tornadoes hit Midwest

Oak Grove was among the hardest hit areas by Monday's storms.

"These 29 reported tornadoes occurred late Monday afternoon into Monday night", ABC News meteorologist Daniel Manzo said.

Two tornadoes reportedly tore through Oak Grove and Smithville, which are near Kansas City.

Numerous homes were seriously damaged but Lockridge said Tuesday it was too early to say how many were destroyed.

In Oak Grove, some 25 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri, 483 homes sustained some type of damage, along with 10 to 12 commercial buildings, said Sni Valley Fire Protection District Chief Carl Scarborough. The National Weather Service gave the tornado a preliminary EF-2 rating on the enhanced fujitta scale, meaning winds were between 111 to 135 miles per hour. No serious injuries were reported.

Across the state line, one hangar was destroyed, at least five others were damaged and airplanes were flipped onto their sides at the Johnson County Executive Airport, in Olathe, Kansas, according to Trent Pittman, the county's assistant director of community preparedness. No injuries were reported in either location.

"It played out as we expected - several tornadoes and a lot of wind damage", Hawblitzel said.

KCP&L and the American Red Cross set up at the Oak Grove Civic Center to hand out dry ice for frozen food, fruit, water and energy bars.

Among the areas placed under a tornado warning was Columbia, Missouri, where this video was shot. Hawblitzel said there were no immediate reports of fatalities from the storms.

The destructive weather was part of a larger storm system that dropped tornadoes and hail across the Midwest on Monday night and early Tuesday.
