Chance the Rapper Donates $1 Million to CPS During Press Conference

The press conference was a followup to Chance's less-than-satisfactory meeting with Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner on Friday, during which he spoke with the Governor about his recent decision to overturn a ruling that reportedly would have resulted in increased funding for CPS, including a $250 million increase in funding for teachers. Former First Lady Michelle Obama even tweeted in support of the rapper.

On Monday, the 23-year-old emcee announced plans to donate $1 million to Chicago public schools, reports NBC Chicago.

"This means over 380,000 kids will not have adult-supervised activities in June and could possibly be put in harm's way", Chance said at a press conference in Westcott Elementary School in his native South Side on Monday (6 March).

Considering the money Chance is earning as an independent artist, he made a decision to take matters into his own hands, announcing that the million dollar donation is coming through ticket sales as a joint effort with his concert promoters, including Live Nation and Ticketmaster. "Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positioning".

By contrast, the most famous Chicago rapper ever, Kanye West, throws media tantrums, sells basic white T-shirts for $100 a piece and endorsed a president who openly race baits, disrespects women and lies every time he opens his mouth. All Chicago Public Schools, in an effort to save $96 million dollars, may soon cut summer school and the last three weeks of the school year. The money will go to after school and arts programs.

"The governor gave me a lot of vague answers in our meeting and since has called me over the weekend", Chance, said.

During his announcement, Chance implied that there was still much more work to be done, and called on others to get involved as well, said Vibe magazine.

The "Coloring Book" rapper, who last month won three Grammys including the prestigious Best New Artist award, threw a national spotlight on a long-running rift over school funding in the third most populous U.S. city. Chance handed a $10,000 giant novelty check to Westcott's principal, who said she was elated that she'd picked up on that unknown caller this morning.

The introduction of charter schools - private schools that take public school funding - has escalated the fight for free public education in Chicago and indeed, nationwide.

Chance closed his prepared statements with a simple message for Rauner: "Do your job".

Following a series of "unsuccessful" conversations with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Bennett announced Monday that he's donating $1 million to CPS as the underfunded district continues to languish amid the state's ongoing budget impasse.
