Warwick Fire: Mother, 4 Children Killed

Western Mass News

"Four children", the children's inconsolable paternal grandmother told the Herald through tears.

Warwick, with a population of about 800, is located in Franklin County and shares a border with New Hampshire.

"There was nothing we could have done different, unfortunately", an emotional Fire Chief Ron Gates said during an afternoon news conference. Two family members were able to escape the fire, but crews were unable to save the remaining five. "(It's) a huge blow to our spirit".

Young said the town was coming together to mourn the loss and respond to the tragedy.

Both parents, Young said, served in local government. "It's a tragic event". O'Mannion said the family worshiped at the church and two of the children who died in the fire were altar servers at the church. The water they used to fight the fire, he said, was drawn from a source about a half-mile from the scene.

Authorities from the Warwick Fire Department say the fire likely started in a wood stove and the home was fully engulfed shortly after. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio.

Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey, said the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal's office and the Northwestern District Attorney.
