Chance the Rapper to Rauner: 'Take our kids off the table'
The Chicago school board's lawsuit against Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state of IL over education funding faces "serious problems getting off the ground as a matter of law", an attorney for the state said in court Friday.
Asked as he stepped onto an elevator what his message was, Chance said: "Take our kids off the table".
Chicago Public Schools officials announced last month that they will cut $46 million from the public school budget after Rauner vetoed a $215 million funding bill in December that schools were counting on to ease their pension burden.
In the lawsuit, filed last month, the school board demanded the state be found in violation of the Illinois Civil Rights Act for maintaining what the lawsuit called a "separate and unequal" system for funding school districts and pension obligations.
Chance officially ascended into the pop culture stratosphere with last year's release of his third album, "Coloring Book", which won three Grammys- and prompted Rauner to send out a congratulatory tweet.
The two men were initially scheduled to meet on Wednesday but had to reschedule due to storms in southern IL.
Chance, who backed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, took the opportunity to ask for a meeting with the governor.
However, the 23-year-old, real name Chancelor Bennett, emerged from the 40-minute meeting visibly agitated.
