Haye released from hospital after Achilles treatment

David Haye

David Haye has undergone surgery to his Achilles after "completely rupturing" his tendon during Saturday night's heavyweight fight with Tony Bellew.

WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew produced a stunning upset to stop bitter rival David Haye in a thrilling heavyweight contest at London's O2 Arena.

The 36-year-old, despite losing mobility and being in agony, somehow fought on until Bellew ended the bout in the 11th round.

"I came good in this fight and showed what I'm about".

Bellew knocked Haye through the ropes, causing Haye's corner to cede the match in the 11th round.

"Just before the stoppage I looked at David and said "stop now"," Bellew said.

The build-up has been overshadowed by a stream of insults — some extremely distasteful — traded by both of the brash fighters, while Haye threw a punch at Bellew in a news conference in November.

" I'm the biggest danger to myself, I'd defend and unify tomorrow but why should I defend and unify when there can be 20 times more money in these heavyweight fights?"

A victory over Fury would lift Parker's profile in the United Kingdom considerably, a potential boon given the explosion in the popularity of heavyweight boxing there.

"First of all I just want to thank all of you people in here and all of you watching on TV", he told Sky Sports.

Haye battled on for six rounds on a snapped Achilles as Bellew turned the London fighter inside out with his superb tactics and focused display.

Bellew said he will take time to assess his future, but promoter Eddie Hearn revealed he had already been approached by the camps of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and WBO titlist Joseph Parker.

Leading names in the sport congratulated Bellew on the stunning victory.

Despite sustaining a fracture that left his hand like a "bowling ball" Bellew was able to tee off at will and from the sixth round when Haye's ankle finally gave way, the result was never in doubt.

"Everyone knows I get off the floor and I fight until the finish".

"That could have been a final eliminator for the world heavyweight title". Maybe even a rematch with David Haye or, I think more likely, to challenge for the world heavyweight title.

Bellew praised Haye's fighting spirit following the bout, and claimed that he was anxious about his opponent's safety.

"He looks a million dollars - he got in the ring and I'm thinking he's an Adonis but bodies don't win fights!"

" I've looked up to David almost all my career as I like the way he fights and even though I've beaten him I still don't think I'm as good as him".
