US Soccer implements rule requiring players to stand for national anthem

ATLANTA GA- SEPTEMBER 18 Megan Rapinoe #15 kneels during the National Anthem prior to the match between the United States and the Netherlands at Georgia Dome

Megan Rapinoe will face punishment if she knees again during the national anthem.

U.S. Soccer revealed Saturday that its board of directors at its annual general meeting in Hawaii had passed a new policy that required players representing the national team to "stand respectfully" during national anthems.

"All persons representing a federation national team shall stand respectfully during the playing of national anthems at any event in which the federation is represented", the policy reads. "I told Megan [Rapinoe] she just needs some time to work her way back in and get games with her club, that it's a marathon, not a sprint".

There is is no predetermined outcome for going against the policy, with punishments to be addressed with each case, Holden reported Gulati as saying.

Megan Rapinoe notably took a knee during the national anthem in September before a US friendly versus Thailand as a protest of social inequality. "It was a little nod to Kaepernick and everything that he's standing for right now".

"Representing your country is a privilege and honor for any player or coach that is associated with U.S. Soccer's National Teams".

It's unknown whether the other athletes like Rapinoe who joined the protest, which ranged from those in the professional ranks to high school sports, will follow suit. Therefore, our national anthem has particular significance for U.S. Soccer.
