Murray beats Verdasco to win first Dubai Tennis Championships title

The Wimbledon champion won eight consecutive games to qualify for the quarter-finals

Verdasco, the world No 35, started in blistering fashion, breaking the Murray serve in the opening game only for the Scot to immediately break back.

As many saw in Acapulco this week, where Nick Kyrgios beat the World No.2 Novak Djokovic, the new generation of players have to generate a ideal serving display to beat the top guns, particularly Murray and Djokovic who have the two best returns on tour.

The rival of world no.1 in the semifinals will be Lucas Pouille from France.

"I think potentially the match yesterday had something to do with that - sometimes if your legs are a little bit exhausted, the serve is one of the first things that goes. It's a good win after Australia", Murray said after winning the title.

The Glasgow native, who had played only once a final at Dubai, in 2012 losing it to Roger Federer, becomes the fourth player this year to win a title saving match points during the tournament after Muller in Sydney, Djokovic in Doha, Estrella Burgos in Quito.

"Often when you get through matches like that (quarter-final against Philipp Kohlschreiber when I saved seven match points) it settles you down for the rest of the tournament". "I'm very happy, it was a really complete match in all the ways that you can imagine".

In the initial stages, though, Verdasco needed to do little out of the ordinary to get a quick break: Two double faults from Murray, two break points, and Verdasco led. "I lost to the number one in the world". Murray clenched his fist as he took the lead for the first time. 4-3.

Nose over net in the seventh game, Verdasco was in prime position for a volley but badly bungled it into the bottom of the net.

Murray rarely looks entirely comfortable with being the centre of attention, but this was special.

"This year has given me great momentum".

He remained as low-key as ever with the media, having spent plenty of time signing for fans first. The Serb won both a year ago.

"It's been a great run".

The man in a nutshell.
