Conservative Davidson says 'no popular support' for independence vote

Jim Sillars campaigned with Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond ahead of 2014's referendum

Her words will no doubt fuel tensions between May's government and Sturgeon's nationalists, who say Scotland should have a chance to decide its future because, unlike England and Wales, it voted to remain in the European Union and wants a separate deal with Brussels.

"The SNP's neglect and mismanagement of Scottish education has been a scandal".

Despite the SNP's grip on political power in Scotland, Downing Street believes Sturgeon is in a weak position on independence. However, across the whole United Kingdom, 52% voted to leave.

Ms Sturgeon is threatening to call another indy vote, saying earlier this week that a second poll "would be a necessary way of giving the people of Scotland a say" in their future.

Further powers Ms May said she would not seek to strip the devolved administrations of powers they now enjoy but her rejection of the repatriation of further powers from Brussels to Holyrood is a challenge to Ms Sturgeon, who has threatened a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Since last year's Brexit vote, SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly said she could push for a new independence referendum if the country - which voted to remain in the European Union while England and Wales voted to leave - is forced into a clean break with the bloc.

'Important single market of the UK'However, the PM said ministers were in talks with the devolved administrations over which powers would be returned from Brussels and which would remain with the central UK government.

The UK prime minister will launch the attack against the first minister of Scotland as she addresses the Scottish Conservative conference in Glasgow.

And she insisted people in Scotland wanted a government focused on the "issues that matter to them day to day". A day later, a spokeswoman for May said that the United Kingdom government did not see any changes in public opinion that could serve as a reason for holding the second referendum on Scottish independence.

May said that "time and again the benefits of the Union - of doing together, collectively, what would be impossible to do apart - are clear".

The Scottish Tory, who has led her party's revival north of the border, said the Scottish Government had promised Scots that the 2014 referendum would be a "once in a generation" event. Scottish Nationalist MPs accused Mrs May of a "power grab" after she dodged the question at Prime Minister's Questions yesterday (1 March).

The British government could reject a request from Scotland for a second vote, but this would only increase tensions with Edinburgh.

Theresa May tells Sturgeon to end obsession with independence.
