Trump Set to Ditch Controversial Water Rule

President Trump today signed an executive order requiring the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers to reconsider the controversial Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule.

Polluters and their allies have sought to overturn the Clean Water Rule in court. President Trump is committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the USA rule.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in a statement said the Obama administration's rule was "a blatant power grab by the federal government to regulate every pothole, ditch, and puddle in the nation".

"I applaud President Trump for taking steps to undo this necessary, misguided overreach", Rounds said.

Trump was welcomed to the signing ceremony by applause from a group of farmers, home builders, county commissioners and lawmakers he had invited to the White House for the occasion. The order also establishes a President's Board of Advisors on HBCUs but leaves much of the budgeting and administration of the initiative for the Department of Education.

"By sending EPA back to the drawing board, the president is taking an important step toward what my colleagues and I have always been working to do: protect our nation's waterways without overbearing regulations that treat every dry ditch in Arizona like it is the Colorado River", Flake said in a statement from Washington. The rule was never about protecting water. "The president's executive order starts the removal of the Obama rule and ensures that we support economic growth, provide regulatory certainty and respect states' rights". And legal challenges stalled the policy shortly after the roll-out. Opponents argue the order may result in certain smaller bodies of water, which feed into larger rivers, lakes and oceans, losing formal protection from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Legal experts say it could take years for the Trump administration to dismantle the Waters of the usa rule.

Pruitt also told the agricultural leaders that the federal government will no longer impose one-size-fits-all solutions on the states. As Oklahoma's attorney general, Scott Pruitt actually sued the EPA over the rule. He has said that calls to do away with the agency are "justified" and spoken of dismantling Mr. Obama's Clean Power Plan. "I gather that this rule puts a huge percentage of the acreage in Florida under jurisdiction". The EPA has countered that the language of WOTUS is meant to clarify which waterways will be protected, and that the focus will remain on critical waterways, not trivial suits for ditches or puddles.
