Torres taken to hospital after head injury in Atletico game

Statistics

Torres collapsed and fell hard after being hit from behind while contesting a ball late in Atletico's 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruna.

Torres appeared to be unconscious on the turf and, according to initial reports, was saved from swallowing his tongue by his quick-thinking teammates.

Atletico players Gabi and Sime Vrsaljko were quick to react, attempting to clear Torres's airways.

He wrote: "Many thanks to all for worrying about me and your messages of encouragement".

"The striker will spend the night under observation". "I hope to be back very soon!"

After being attended for at least five minutes, Torres was subsequently taken off the pitch on a stretcher and then transported to a hospital in A Coruna.

Atletico released a statement later on which read: "A cranial and cervical CT scan carried out on Fernando Torres has ruled out that the Rojiblanco striker has suffered any alterations or traumatic injuries".

Immediately after the game, boss Diego Simeone said: "Torres is conscious, he has a head trauma".

Torres had entered the game as a substitute for Kevin Gameiro 20 minutes earlier. "News we've received so far is positive, most important is Fernando recovers OK". "The movement didn't look good. we hope [for] the best for Fernando".

Atletico responded after half-time and equalised in stunning fashion 22 minutes from time when Antoine Griezmann thrashed home a shot from fully 30 yards.
