Spotify trialling Hi-Fi music tier, report claims

Spotify may launch a Hi Fi

According to The Verge, select Spotify users have been receiving invitations to subscribe to the new service called "Spotify Hi-Fi" for a fee which will vary between $5 to $10 a month.

The leaked promotion was spotted by Reddit users in the USA on 1 March, with some posting screenshots showing the new tier priced at $5 above the current $9.99 a month cost for Spotify Premium (£9.99 in the UK), and others with notifications stating that the upgrade would cost $10 or more.

Spotify appears to be doing some testing for its Hi-Fi service, gauging interest in a higher-quality offering and trialling different prices to see what fits best.

The notification also suggests that Spotify Hi-Fi members will get discounts on limited edition vinyl records as well as one free record. Lossless audio, on the other hand, offers even higher audio quality while making the files manageable enough for streaming consumption.

Spotify users have been prompted with a notification about Hi-Fi, but it looks like Spotify is now testing out a pricing strategy for the new tier. As more people have come on board, Spotify and Apple Music are emerging as the early leaders.

Apple Music said it hit 20 million in December, adding 3 million subscribers in three months at that time. With smartphones switching to lossless services like Apple's Lightning connector and Android's USB-C, Spotify will do the same with the Hi-Fi. Some users have been greeted with a pop-up messaging alerting them the new service will soon be available for $5/month.

Spotify is openly testing a lossless streaming option.
