Xenophobic attacks: Senate names delegation to South Africa

They comprised of 95 males and two females.

The deportees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday night in a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg.

Over 500 Nigerians have been deported in the past one month from the United Kingdom, Libya and Mali.

Last week, 314 Nigerians were forced to return home as a result of harrowing experiences in Libya.

Chaytoo said that while some corporate members of the chamber supported relief efforts to alleviate the plight of Nigerian nationals affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in SA‚ more pragmatic and sustainable solutions needed to be found.

Ukeje had suggested an inter-parliamentary interface, stating that legislators are the closest arm of government to the citizens and would be able to assist with the reorientation of their citizens on the role played by Nigerians in the liberation of South Africa.

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has nominated the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to lead a Senate delegation to South Africa.

The Senate accordingly resolves to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, to provide insight into government's plans towards engaging South Africa to end the xenophobic attacks.

Speaking outside the MTN building, Kadiri said: “We, under the umbrella of NANS, are demanding that the Nigerian government severs, without delay, diplomatic ties with the Republic of South Africa.

"To the committee we are not happy, we are highly disappointed and what we would expect is that your delegations, we have the mandate of the two Houses for us to go to South Africa". We have been talking to you based on the report of the Senate committee with the Foreign Affairs Ministry in April, 2015. We urge them to urgently deploy adequate resources and put in place measures aimed at protecting human life, regardless of nationality.

South Africa has deported 97 Nigerians for various offences following a series of raids, Nigerian officials said on Wednesday, amid heightened bilateral tensions over anti-immigrant violence in South Africa.

"We are only telling them (Nigerians), to please hide to give a low profile".
