Microsoft Unveils $10 Monthly Gaming Subscription Service For Xbox One

Microsoft already has a lot of great third-party partners involved, and teased games from 2K, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Sega, SNK, THQ Nordic, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios.

The games include both Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 games.

Perhaps most importantly, Xbox Game Pass gives you access to current-generation and previous-gen titles. However, you will still need Gold if you want to play Games Pass titles in online multiplayer. "That means continuous, full-fidelity gameplay without having to worry about streaming, bandwidth or connectivity issues", Microsoft's Phil Spencer explained.

To be clear, Xbox Game Pass isn't a streaming service, subscribers will be able to download the games and add-ons to their console. Xbox Game Pass is your ticket to endless play. When it does launch, Xbox Live Gold subscribers will gain access to it first. Furthermore it will also keep updating its game's list every month to ensure that you have new content to choose from.

Microsoft is now "testing Xbox Game Pass with select members of the Xbox Insider Program".

When I saw the news this morning, I thought I perhaps had slept in until E3 - which (unfortunately) is still a few months away.

For now, Xbox Game Pass is in limited testing through the Xbox Insider Program. As a point of comparison, Sony's PlayStation Now is more expensive on a monthly basis at $20, but does come out cheaper, at $100 total, if you purchase for a full year.

Before the service rolls out to everyone, selected members of the Xbox Insider Program (in the Alpha Preview ring) will be able to test the service. The comparison with video subscription service Netflix is easily made. Those are solid, and while we know there will be some indies, it looks like there will be top-tier games as well.

You'll then have a window of 30 days to play the game offline, before you have to sign in again to continue to access it.
