Wild land Martin Hanzal from Coyotes, but he didn't come cheap

Martin Hanzal

That, coupled with the fact that the organization is flush with top-notch prospects following the emergence of players like Luke Kunin, Jordan Greenway, Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek, and the trade makes even more sense from a Wild perspective. He was selected by the Coyotes with the 17th overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. While he started the following season with HC Ceské Budejovice, he finished the season in America playing for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. The most games he has played in since the 2010-2011 season was when he suited up for 65 in 2013-14.

Hanzal was considered one of the top players on the market before the March 1 trade deadline.

"Standing at 6'6", Hanzal is a big two-way center, and is instantly the biggest skater on the Wild.

Hanzal is a 30-year-old, 6-foot-6 center from the Czech Republic who has spent his entire ten-year National Hockey League career in Arizona, where he was the Coyotes' alternate captain.

However, captain Shane Doan didn't seem to feel that way, as evidenced by an in-game interview he conducted with Todd Walsh of Fox Sports Arizona during the Coyotes' 3-2 win over Buffalo Sunday night.

It's a 2017 first-round pick going from Minny to AZ for Hanzal, 2018 2nd and the conditional pick is 2019. Whether Hanzal equals the price they paid is up for debate.

If you're curious, here is Hanzal's HERO Chart from Own the Puck.

That said, Hanzal should provide the Wild with depth scoring and size down the middle. Hanzal should also help take some pressure off Koivu for any important draws and help improve the Wild's penalty kill, which hasn't been able to rely on any of the Wild's various 4th line centers this season (Haula excluded).

Minnesota has a good chance to make a run at the Western Conference title this season, but it could have used these assets to target an impact player better than Hanzal.
