What is VX, the chemical weapon that killed Kim Jong Un's half-brother?

Malaysia's National Police Deputy Inspector-General Noor Rashid Ibrahim, front left, speaks in front of a screen showing detained Indonesian Siti Aisyah during a news conference regarding the apparent assassination of Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of the North Korean leader, in Kuala Lumpur on February 19.

"The sweep will be conducted from 1 a.m. on February 26 to 7 a.m. on February 27".

Now that the poison has been identified, Kuala Lumpur airport is being swept for traces of it, and amid fears the public could be at risk of contamination, so are all other areas the two women are believed to have visited.

Malaysian officials said test showed he had been poisoned using VX, a highly toxic nerve agent the United Nations classifies as a weapon of mass destruction.

"They probably conducted a lot of tests to come up with a flawless amount that would kill Kim Jong Nam, but not harm the assailants or anyone else nearby in a crowded airport", Kim Dae Young, a military expert at South Korea's Korea Defense and Security Forum, said. He died on the way to hospital.

North Korea and Malaysia are already entangled in a dispute regarding Kim's autopsy, after Kuala Lumpur refused to repatriate Kim to Pyongyang without a family DNA sample.

A leading regional security expert said it would not have been hard to smuggle VX into Malaysia in a diplomatic pouch, which are not subject to regular customs checks.

Investigators are also seeking seven other North Koreans wanted in connection with the case, including a diplomat pleading immunity at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The meeting in NY would have been the first time a senior North Korean envoy would visit the United States since 2011 and the first contact between U.S. and North Korean representatives since Trump took office.

Malaysia's police chief cast doubt on their statements, however, noting that they washed their hands after handling the substance.

"And if he failed to turn up upon given this notice, then we will go to the next step by getting a warrant of arrest from the court", he told reporters.

And on Thursday, North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency reported that Pyongyang blamed Malaysia for its citizen's death and accused it of adopting an "unfriendly attitude". Siti and Doan Thi Huong, a Vietnamese, were arrested for the attack.

"She only said that it's a kind of oil, baby oil, something like that", said Mr Andreano, when queried over Siti's knowledge of the poison. According to her, that person gave her 400 ringgits to do this activity.

"If the chemical content was brought (into the country) in small amount, it's hard for us to detect (the origin of the chemicals)", he said.

Indonesia says it confirmed the woman's identity via her fingerprints.

Malaysian police said Friday that one of the two women did suffer vomiting after she was taken into custody, but that she had recovered since.
