Somalia:Car bomb blast in Somali capital kills at least 25 people

Strongly condemning today's terrorist attack at a marketplace in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, which reportedly killed at least 25 people and injured dozens more, the United Nations envoy in the country stressed that incident is a brutal reminder of the retrograde tactics employed by violent extremists.

The attack was the first in the capital since the February 8 election of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, a Somali-American citizen from Buffalo, New York. We have seen at 22 people including soldiers and civilians dead and twenty more others were also wounded.

"They are even more unsafe because of this type of hit and run attacks, which unfortunately, they've proven to be very effective with over the past few years", said Temin.

Captain Mohamed Hussein said the powerful explosion, thought to be from a vehicle bomb, tore through shops and food stands in Mogadishu's Madina district on Sunday.

Many people have suffered extensive third degree burns and others were burned beyond recognition.

The Somalian president described the attack as "horrific" on Twitter and shared pictures of himself visiting victims in hospital.

The new Somalian president has announced a $100,000 (£80,000) reward for information on anyone planning attacks in the country. Militant group al-Shabab has frequently targeted hotels and markets during its decade-long insurgency.

Mohamed Haji, local butcher who got wounds due to the blast, pointed to one of the clothes shops damaged by the explosion, said "Someone had parked the auto here and left before it was detonated".

Civil war has affected Somalia since 1991.

African Union (AU) troops drove al-Shabaab militants out of Mogadishu in August 2011.
