Mount Vernon offering free admission for Presidents Day

"What if we don't want to celebrate all presidents?"

Nonetheless, we have learned to roll with it, and the holiday is useful in revisiting the achievements of two undeniably great presidents.

Presidents Day was first created in order to celebrate President George Washington's birthday.

Beyond Trump's orders on immigration, few of the administration's policies have unsettled many European nations as much as his ban on funding for global groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions to women in developing nations. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732.

The holiday's specific date has little significance as it falls on different dates each year because it is always on the third Monday in February, thus guaranteeing a three-day weekend. We are blessed to witness power change from one American president to the next, without guns, tanks or armies to enforce such succession.

But today's holiday is meant to honor presidential contributions that date back a little farther.

In the United States, today's observance remains officially named George Washington's Birthday, which has been observed as a legal holiday since 1885 and a Monday holiday since 1971.

General George Washington (1732 - 1799) stands in the prow of a rowing boat crossing the DE to seek safety in Pennysylvania after defeat by the British. But, there is a reason the federal holiday is simply Washington's Birthday.

"I was joking about the objective of Presidents' Day being about discounts on mattresses and furniture, but haven't many Americans lost sight of the day's true meaning?" But, some of the southern states would never be caught honoring President Lincoln because of the basic animosity toward Lincoln over the eradication of slavery. Still, the federal holiday is, and has always been Washington's Birthday.

But in many ways the ceremonial aspect of the modern presidency stems from the horribly abbreviated career of John Kennedy, whose political martyrdom invited a more Catholic approach to the public rites. He deserves this special holiday for helping what this country and that office became. Some of them took Washington's example to heart: Lincoln was incapable of personal grandiosity, Coolidge eschewed pomp and ceremony and Eisenhower insisted that he be laid out in the plain pine box of an ordinary soldier, wearing a field jacket with no medals or ribbons on it. President's Day is not only a federal holiday, it has also been adopted by various state governments but for various purposes.
