Afridi bids farewell to International Cricket

Pakistan's Shahid Afridi attends a press conference in Kolkata India. Flamboyant all-rounder Afridi says he has quit international cricket and will just focus on playing Pakistan Super League for

On Sunday, 36-year-old legendary Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi announced his retirement from worldwide cricket after a glorious 21-year-long career. Afridi was a prolific all-rounder in Twenty 20 cricket. Afridi confirmed this decision to retire on Sunday. "I am just playing (PSL) for my fans".

He said: "I have said goodbye to global cricket".

"I have said this before as well, whatever cricket is left in me, I will continue playing league cricket for my fans, I am not playing these matches for any comeback [to worldwide cricket] I am playing it for my fans and I am enjoying it", said the flamboyant all-rounder. Now my foundation is important for me. "I have played with seriousness and in a professional way for my country", he said.

The man nicknamed "Boom Boom" for his aggressive batting played his final Test in 2010 but remained in the shorter formats of the game until a year ago. It was his explosive batting, which earned him the nickname "Boom Boom".

'I have said goodbye to global cricket, ' Afridi told reporters in Sharjah on Sunday night soon after his 28-ball 54 almost pulled off victory for his team Peshawar Zalmi against Karachi Kings in the PSL.

All in all, Afridi played 27 Tests and scored 1,716 runs, which included five centuries, at an average of 36.51. Afridi played 398 ODIs, scoring 8064 runs, including five centuries and managed to take an impressive 395 wickets. So once he didn't announce his retirement after the World T20, a new selection committee under Inzamamul Haq simply stopped picking him. He already quit Tests in 2010 and ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup.

Afridi has not played for his country since stepping down as captain following the 2016 World Twenty20 in India. But that apparent understanding with Pakistan Cricket Board officials seems to have not come to fruition.
