Trump to pick Alexander Acosta as new nominee for labor secretary

R. Alexander Acosta, seen in 2007, is President Trump's new pick for labor secretary.

Acosta is a former member of the National Labor Relations Board, a graduate of Harvard College and a former us attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

NOGUCHI: Acosta, a Cuban-American, has a more traditional pedigree for labor secretary having served as an assistant attorney general under President George W. Bush.

He then became USA attorney for the Southern District of Florida, holding the job until 2009. He prosecuted Jack Abramoff for fraud and, notably, brought a case against that resulted in the Swiss bank paying $780 million in fines. As a nation, we have not forgotten the events of 10 years ago.

It's another step in the long and storied political career of the Miami native, who graduated from Gulliver Prep before attending Harvard University for both his undergrad degree and law school.

Acosta, dean of the Florida International University law school in Miami, served on the National Labor Relations Board from December 2002 to August 2003, and as a federal prosecutor in Florida. Acosta "has been through Senate confirmation three times, confirmed, did very, very well", Trump said.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) has yet to announce a date of Acosta's confirmation hearing. "He has an impressive work and academic background".

The announcement comes one day after Trump's original nominee for the job, fast-food CEO Andy Puzder, withdrew his name from consideration, during a chaotic week for the administration.

"Reports that Andrew Puzder has made a decision to withdraw his name from consideration to be the next Secretary of Labor is a temporary stay of execution for working families in our country", said Charles Chamberlain, executive director at Democracy for America. Palomarez said he is excited to work with Acosta on economic and labor issues.

Acosta has been a staunch defender of the civil rights of Muslims who faced a backlash after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

"Americans deserve a Secretary of Labor who will fight for a living wage, pay equity for women, and workers' right to organize", said Chamberlain.

The president introduced his new pick to run the Labor Department. They tend not to be radical ideologues most of the time. This month, Trump issued a memo to the acting Labor secretary calling for a review of a pending rule affecting retirement advisors.
