Boris Johnson & social media attack Tony Blair's call for Brexit revolt

Mr Corbyn said he would ensure the Labour party respects the results of the referendum.

"This is not the time for retreat, indifference or despair", he said.

Tony Blair has been accused of "insulting the intelligence" of voters and "arrogance" after he urged opponents of Brexit to "rise up" against leaving the EU.

The failed Tory leadership contender claimed Blair should "work with the Government to make a success of Brexit instead of trying to undermine British democracy". "It is no coincidence that the infamous immigration poster of Leave was a picture of Mr Farage in front of a line of Syrian people". "The fact that Blair has been deployed is perhaps indicative of the fact that there aren't many other serious political public figures who are willing to put their head above the parapet", he added.

"The people voted without knowledge of the true terms of Brexit".

"Listening to Tony Blair this morning, I've totally done a 360 again, and i think 'no!'".

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is to give a speech on Friday in which he will encourage pro-European British citizens to "rise up" against Brexit. I hate it, but it is true.

Blair's intervention, and his accusation that perhaps people had voted Leave not knowing exactly what they were choosing, infuriated Brexiteers.

The slump in the value of the pound after the Brexit vote is pushing up inflation, as is costlier crude oil leading to rising fuel prices. "To be perfectly frank it would be better if Blair butted out and left this debate to people who haven't betrayed the trust of British people".

The 63-year-old politician was seen as making a comeback to frontline politics of sorts with plans for a cross-party "movement" to change the UK's mind on Brexit. But former leader of the minority Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg said he agreed with what Blair had said. The challenge now is to persuade people to change their mind'.

The EU has not formally addressed the question, although Donald Tusk, who will oversee Brexit negotiations as chair of EU leaders' summits, did say in October that he had received legal advice that it could be stopped.

One long-time senior EU official said few would ultimately want to snub Britain if it had a change of heart: "But", the person said, "The EU could want to impose some conditions, limiting the special status it has enjoyed in so many areas".

One of Blair's key arguments is that it was never clear whether a Leave vote would result in a soft Brexit or a hard Brexit.
