Norma McCorvey, 'Jane Roe' in Roe v. Wade, dies

Norma McCorvey Plaintiff In Roe v. Wade Abortion Decision Dies At 69

Roe v. Wade became a class-action suit, and the ensuing 7-to-2 ruling articulated that the decision to terminate a pregnancy is protected by a constitutional right to privacy.

According to the Washington Post, McCorvey was 22-years-old when she became pregnant for the third time in 1969. He said she died of heart failure at an assisted living center in Katy, Texas. Unwed and struggling with addiction and poverty, McCorvey sought a legal way out of her current situation.

Discrediting the entire foundation of her lawsuit and not allowing any aspects of it to be taken as truth, certainly makes her and the court's decision more complicated that it already was. Wealthier women traveled to states where the procedure was legal or easily obtainable, but women from Texas in McCorvey's position didn't have that option.

She gave a second child up for adoption, but when she got pregnant a third time she made a decision to have an abortion.

McCovey had supported abortion rights into the 1990s, then converted to Christianity and later Catholicism and became an outspoken opponent of abortion. She simply wanted an abortion and could not get one in the state.

McCorvey was not granted permission to end her pregnancy, although she won her initial court case, and a challenge to the initial ruling from a Texas court continued throughout her pregnancy.

McCorvey died in the Houston area with her daughter Melissa and several grandchildren present, said the Rev.

McCorvey had already had the baby, which she gave up for adoption, by the time the case was settled. She says her mother tricked her into signing away custody of her firstborn and then threw her out of the house.

'I'm a simple woman with a ninth-grade education who wants women not to be harassed or condemned, ' she told the New York Times in 1994. "That's the only thing I never had". I just never had the privilege to go into an abortion clinic, lay down and have an abortion.
