AAA study finds millennial drivers worst behaved

Report: Millennials are the worst drivers on the road

Rookie teenage drivers have always been seen as the worst motorists on the road, but now there's evidence that their older cousins - millennials - may be the most reckless people behind the wheel.

AAA says the unsafe behaviors include texting while driving, running red-lights and speeding.

A new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that distracted driving and other unsafe behaviors are significant contributing factors to the rise in fatalities. Given that US traffic fatalities rose by seven percent in 2015-the biggest single-year jump in half a century-and are continuing on at a record pace, that's not exactly good news. But it was their attitude toward speeding that particularly shocked the researchers.

"Alarmingly, some of the drivers ages 19-24 believe that their risky driving behavior is acceptable", said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director.

Of course, as is typically the case when millennials get pinned for any number of the world's problems, this demographic is far from the only one indulging in risky behaviors behind the wheel. The survey data are from a sample of 2,511 licensed drivers ages 16 and older who reported driving in the past 30 days.

Iverson said texting while driving is the most talked-about issue in distracted driving and added it is so unsafe because it requires directing both eyesight and brain power away from the road. The survey finds they're more reckless than teens.

In addition, almost half drove through a red light, compared with 36 percent of all drivers.

Also, drivers 19-24 were about twice as likely to type or send a text message or email while driving. They are also 1.4 times more likely than others to report driving at least 10 miles per hour over the speed limit on a residential street.

"Especially with young drivers, they sometimes forget to look at other people on the road and are more concerned only with their driving", he said.
