President Donald Trump picks Alexander Acosta for Secretary of Labor
Acosta, who took over as FIU law dean in July 2009, previously served as U.S. attorney for the southern district of Florida and as the assistant attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division.
Andrew Puzder, President Donald Trump's pick for Labor Secretary, has just withdrawn himself as nominee for the position.
Trump nominated Acosta after Andy Puzder on Wednesday withdrew his nomination to head up the Labor Department amid growing opposition in the Senate. Acosta was the first Hispanic who held the rank of assistant attorney general.
Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants, which owns or franchises fast-food chains Carl's Jr. and Hardee's.
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown said United States workers "can breathe a sigh of relief" after Puzder's announcement.
Puzder's withdrawal had been widely expected to occur sometime within the next 24 hours, and has now been confirmed by both Fox Business Network and NBC News. Acosta was the subject of some controversy after it was revealed his office illegally recorded conversations carried out between a defense attorney and a defendant, who was later acquitted.
But with the four defections, confirmation of fast-food executive Andrew Puzder is threatened, CNN reported citing several sources.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pivoted to the most muscular defense of Puzder's nomination, vowing to stick with him despite Puzder's acknowledgement of having employed a housekeeper not authorized to work in the US.
The withdrawal comes after a week of scrutiny of decades-old abuse allegations from Puzder's ex-wife, which she has since retracted. Earlier this week, Senators acknowledged that they viewed video from an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1990, where Fierstein anonymously described the abuse she faced.
The last-minute press conference comes amid a tumultuous week for the president, who saw Mr. Puzder drop out and had to force a resignation from his national security adviser over his misleading administration officials about contacts with Russian Federation during the transition.
