John McCain will oppose confirmation of Trump budget nominee Mick Mulvaney

Still, Mulvaney does not need McCain's vote for his confirmation to pass.

"This record can not be ignored in light of the significant authority exercised by the director of OMB over the federal budget", McCain said, pointing out that Mulvaney, as a member of the House, repeatedly voted to cut defense spending and also supported the total withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Mulvaney's confirmation vote in the Senate is scheduled for Thursday.

For federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Education Department, the threat of Mulvaney's new job in the office that develops the executive budget, oversees agency performance and provides clearance for the executive branch's legislative proposals goes beyond the likelihood of a defense spending cut.

Rep. Mick Mulvaney testifies before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on January 24.

"I will vote to oppose Congressman Mulvaney's nomination because it would be irresponsible to place the future of the defense budget in the hands of a person with such a record and judgment on national security", McCain said.

House Budget Committee chairman, Rep. Diane Black, R-Tenn., said Mulvaney is a "tireless advocate" for a responsible budget. As I said then, insisting on blind cuts or a reckless government shutdown to prove a point isn't real leadership.

On February 2, the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the nomination of Mulvaney in a 8-7 vote. McCain, chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, agrees.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) speaks to reporters as he arrives for the Republican policy luncheon on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., February 14, 2017.

He added, "And this record can not be ignored in light of the significant authority exercised by the Director of OMB over the federal budget". "Discretionary spending- which funds our national defense, national laboratories like Oak Ridge National Laboratory, national parks like the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the National Institutes of Health - has been relatively flat for the last eight years and will be for the next several years, and it is not the source of our country's growing federal debt". "This is about principle".
