Two-Year-Old Chicago Boy Killed In Gang Hit, Cops Say

Six people, including a 2-year-old boy and his uncle, were killed and at least six other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago during an 18-hour period from Tuesday morning to Wednesday. The 26-year-old man who died was a known gang member, he said.

Lavontay White Jr. was shot in the head. Superintendent Eddie Johnson said paramedics were able to revive Lavontay at the scene, but that he later died at Stroger Hospital.

In the front of the auto, Lavontay's pregnant, 20-year-old aunt and her boyfriend were hit. She is now listed in stable condition, with her child expected to survive.

Police said the pair were live-streaming their vehicle ride on Facebook Live as shots rang out.

Police are reviewing surveillance video and sources indicate that they have "very good" leads on the case.

"They shot at us!" the woman says as she ran through the home.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the shooting should be a "turning point". On the first day of January alone, 28 people were shot in Chicago, according to data from the Chicago Police Department.

"My gut is telling me that when we finally find this guy, we're going to find that he's a repeat gun offender". The victims' names have not yet been released.

Police have confirmed the authenticity of the video and it is part of their investigation, spokesman Frank Giancamilli said.

Two children have died this week and one is on life support, he said.

"But it's just ridiculous that we have to keep seeing children pay the price because we can't hold these individuals accountable". Police said the officers thought the SUV matched the description of the vehicle wanted in the toddler's death.

Gang violence in Chicago has gained national attention, with 762 homicides recorded last year-almost 300 more than 2015-and over 3,500 shooting incidents.

"They just don't fear it, and until we create that mental accountability to them to not pick up a gun, we're going to continue to see this cycle of violence", Mr Johnson said.
