Speed a possible factor in Taiwan bus crash that killed 32

At least 32 people were killed and more were taken to hospital after a tour bus crashed on a highway in Taiwan on Tuesday night.

Pictures from the scene of the crash show the bus lying on its side with rescuers checking over the site for survivors. The trip had been organised by a Taipei-based Butterflies Love Flowers Travel Agency (Tieh Lien Hua Travel Agency), according to Taiwan's tourism bureau and the city authorities.

No other information was immediately available. Police are still trying to decipher whether the bus was speeding at that time. Investigators said driver fatigue could not be ruled out, the Apple Daily reported.

But Mr Ringo Lee, a spokesman for the Travel Agent Association of Taiwan, said the driver had in fact rested for two days before driving on Monday. Rescue workers used a crane to lift the injured bus from its wheels, after all the passengers on board were extracted from the wreckage.

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Lin Chuan gave their condolences.

There were reportedly only local tourists with no foreign nationals who were coming from Taichung.

The crash is the latest accident involving tour buses in Taiwan.

It comes after a bus inferno in July previous year killed 25 Chinese holidaymakers on board, and is the latest in a series of deadly incidents that have tarnished Taiwan's safety record.
