Gambia set to rejoin Commonwealth under new president

Barrow has cancelled a bid to pull out of the International Criminal Court.

Mr Barrow, who was sworn in last month, has also said The Gambia will reverse its move to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The talks with the president are expected to formalise statements by Barrow during campaigning previous year that The Gambia would resume its place in the Commonwealth group of former British colonies.

A Commonwealth Secretariat spokesman said: "We welcome any effort being made by the newly democratically elected government of The Gambia to try to rejoin the Commonwealth".

According to state media, Gambia's government has notified the United Nations of its intention to remain in the ICC.

The announcement constitutes a rare victory of late for the embattled tribunal.

The West African state is a popular holiday destination for Britons. He has denied these allegations. Equatorial Guinea does not have an extradition treaty with Gambia.

The Foreign Secretary has visited the West African nation, which he said was having an "extraordinary moment" following the "new start" under President Adama Barrow.

(JollofNews) - British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is visiting the Gambia to mark the country's return to the Commonwealth.

Mr Jammeh took The Gambia out of the Commonwealth in 2013, calling it a neo-colonial institution.

Following talks with Mr Barrow, the Foreign Secretary said: "I am delighted to say that The Gambia is now on the path back into the Commonwealth and we will try and do that as fast as possible". "The strength of our partnerships show that Global Britain is growing in influence and activity around the world".

The Hague-based court, set up in 2002, is often accused of bias against African nations, leading The Gambia, Burundi and South Africa to send notice past year they would no longer recognise the ICC's jurisdiction.

Barrow, whose swearing-in was held in neighbouring Senegal, is to be inaugurated as president in a ceremony at the national stadium on Saturday.

Johnson is to meet President Adama Barrow and visit the British-funded Medical Research Council, his ministry said, resetting ties after years of tension with Jammeh.
