N Korea claims missile launch success

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the construction site of Ryomyong Street in this undated

A North Korean ballistic missile test conducted on 12 February has been widely condemned by the global community.

"North Korea openly states that its ballistic missiles are meant to deliver nuclear weapons to strike cities in the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan", Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, explained.

Abe called North Korea's actions "absolutely intolerable". "Pyongyang's behavior threatens not only our allies in East Asia, but also US national security and the American homeland".

The missile was launched at 07:55 local time (22:55 GMT 11 February) from the airbase at Banghyon in North Pyongan province on the west side of the Korean peninsula and flew east for about 500 km into the Sea of Japan.

After a North Korean ballistic missile test Saturday, President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe scrambled to assess the situation within view of diners at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club, where they were having dinner.

After Abe spoke, Trump, who had been standing behind him, took the microphone and said: "I just want everybody to understand and fully know that the United States of America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 percent". Tests of another intermediate-range missile, the Musudan, met with mixed results. "Most of the people [on the terrace] didn't even realize what was happening", DeAgazio said.

North Korea claimed Sunday the anti-missile defense system THAAD and South Korea's "Kill Chain" strategy to destroy and detect missiles will not defend against its projectiles.

A fully developed ICBM could threaten the continental United States, which is about 9,000km from North Korea.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Geng Shuang (耿爽) said that China opposed the launch, which violated UN Security Council resolutions that call for an end to North Korea's nuclear and missile tests.

Geng said China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has been "completely and comprehensively" implementing security council resolutions on the nuclear issue. "The North Korean leader likes to draw attention at times like this".

Third, Gardner said, the United States must continue to strengthen its alliance with South Korea and Japan.

We considered other alternate interpretations of this test, such as a failed or partial ICBM test in which only the first stage was functional, but the trajectory is not a good match for the first stage of any of North Korea's known ICBM projects.

"Mr. President, we are at a critical juncture with regard to North Korea and its provocative behavior", Gardner wrote.
