J&K Encounter: Four Hizbul Terrorists Killed In Kulgam

Security forces indulge in an encounter with terrorists in Yaripora of Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam, 2 bodies

In the current year's fiercest encounter in Jammu and Kashmir, four local terrorists, two civilians and two soldiers got killed in Kulgam -one of the politically hypersensitive zones in southern Kashmir on Sunday.

According to an Indian police senior official in Kashmir, three militants fled from the clashes while three Indian soldiers were wounded.

Despite repeated check on all the houses yielded no success, the security forces rechecked a house where the intelligence input had suggested about the presence of the militants. Three more "rebels" managed to escape, an Indian police superintendent claimed.

At least two terrorists were killed in the encounter which broke out in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam this morning. He mentioned that as the security forces were closing in on the position of the militants, they opened up firing resulting in the injuries to five soldiers.

An advisory issued by Jammu and Kashmir police and Army, asking people to stay away from encounter sites to ensure smooth counter-insurgency operations, seems to have fallen on deaf ears as the trend has only picked up following the killing of the Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani in July previous year. Heavy contingents of police and security forces have been deployed in the region to prevent massive public protests.

In the evening, thousands of people attended the funeral of slain militants and civilians.

The police told Hindustan Times that two of the militants killed were part of the Hizbul Mujahideen group, while the others belonged to the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Opposition National Conference (NC) has demanded a probe into the civilian casualties, as more than 12 protesters have sustained bullet injuries.

Despite that some people are coming out and also attempting to help the militants that has become a new challenge for security forces in Kashmir and sometimes also lead to causalities.

Reports said that soon after the pre-dawn swoop by the security forces, hundreds of residents relocated to the encounter site chanting pro-freedom slogans and hurling stones at uniformed men.
