Google Maps update lets you create and share lists of places

In the post, Google said the new shareable feature will let users to save locations to a number of lists and then share them with friends and family directly within the Maps app.

With this update, users can now search for a destination in Google Maps, tap the business' name and tap "Save" to add the place to a list.

To peruse items you've saved to your lists, tap on "Your Places" in the Google Maps side menu, then tap the Saved tab. However, getting the full experience of browsing a saved list offline requires you to download the offline maps of that particular area.

You can share your favorite spots across different social networks, popular messaging apps, email, and via text messages. If you receive such a link you can choose to follow the list inside the app. On both Android and iOS, users can share link to your list via any app on your phone: Hangouts, SMS, Whatsapp, or even on Facebook or Twitter.

For example, if you plan a museum trip in a new city you're visiting, you can add them all to a "Museums" to visit list. I'm thinking lists like, "New Beer Spots" or "Burger Places in NYC I Need to Visit That May Leave Me in a Coma".

If you wanted to save a location in Google Maps, for years your only option was to add a little star icon. You could save places and access the list, but that list grew long quickly.

You can also begin following lists made by other Google Maps users - so if a hot new bar or cafe opens up nearby, you won't be left out. The lists feature is also available in limited functionality within offline maps.

The new features gives a more social feel to the app akin to Foursquare.

You can't create lists on the web yet, but the update is rolling out to Android and iOS devices today.

This will then display all your saved locations on the map, so you'll always know when a special place is nearby.

Last week, Google Maps began offering in-map views of nearby available car-hails as well as background on planned destinations, including reviews, articles, restaurant menus.
