UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson renounces USA citizenship

Boris Johnson

New York-born Boris Johnson has officially given up his American citizenship.

Johnson has called his former dual British-American nationality an accident of birth - his parents were living in New York City at the time.

Johnson, who was appointed foreign secretary shortly after Britain voted to leave the European Union in a June referendum, had dual nationality and, according to local media, settled a USA tax bill in 2015 on the earlier sale of his London house.

"The reason I'm thinking I probably will want to make a change is that my commitment is, and always has been, to Britain", he told the Sunday Times newspaper.

The Conservative politician - who was born in Manhattan in 1964 and holds a USA passport alongside a British one - complained that it was a "laborious business, they don't make it easy for you".

Johnson had previously settled a capital gains tax bill sent by the USA after he sold his house in north London, calling the demand "absolutely outrageous".

His decision could be linked to taxes - Americans living outside the country are still liable to pay income taxes.

The previous year he had insisted he would not settle up, saying: "Why should I?"

'I think, you know, I'm not a - I, you know, I haven't lived in the United States for, you know, well, since I was five years old'.
