Pakistan Begins Naval Exercises in Response to Indian Maneuver

Navies strive for ‘Aman’ at sea

Commanders of the 12 countries salute their flags during the inauguration ceremony for AMAN 17 in Karachi.

Russian Federation has sent three ships for the exercise which, according to Pakistan Navy, is held every two years to raise awareness about naval affairs and improve coordination between different navies. It is a matter of pride for Pakistan that the defenders of our sea-lanes have successfully and with brilliance been organizing these drills every alternate year since 2007.

The multinational "Aman-17" naval exercise with 37 countries, including Pakistan, began in the Arabian Sea near Karachi on Friday.

A senior United States naval officer was recently quoted as saying in India that it was routine for American and Indian navies to jointly track Chinese submarines in the Arabian Sea region.

A Pakistani naval official said warships from Russia, China and the U.S. have arrived to take part in the exercise.

"I am glad that through AMAN series of exercises, Pakistan Navy has been able to act as a bridge in the maritime domain by bringing together the navies of East and West on one platform".

Reiterating that through AMAN 17 the Pakistan Navy would strengthen its regional and extra-regional countries, Vice Admiral Hussaini had said 15 ships, along with two P3C Orion aircraft, five helicopters, 11 Special Operation Forces EOD teams, were also important modules of the exercise. "Special Forces worldwide find themselves in non-conventional wars, peculiar operations and home defense missions which were unseen just a decade ago", a press release from the Pakistani Naval Headquarters reads.

The premier pointed out that maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean are both multidimensional and multifaceted. He also valued participating nations for supporting Pakistan's resolve for ensuring peace in the region. Threats such as maritime terrorism, drug trafficking and piracy have acquired worldwide dimensions, he said. I am delighted that the Royal Navy chose to send Daring to Pakistan to help mark the 70th anniversary of relations between our two countries. In 2015, only global maritime conference was held.
