Trump reaffirms commitment to one-China policy

Trump reaches out to Xi Jinping seeks 'constructive relationship' with China

United States President Donald Trump reaffirmed the "One China" policy in his first phone conversation with China's President Xi Jinping since taking office, despite previous critical comments on the subject. Officials told the Times that Xi would not agree to speak with Trump until after his public acknowledgment of the policy, which in effect cuts off official governmental ties with Taiwan, officially named the Republic of China.

On Thursday, the White House announced that Trump had affirmed the United States' commitment to the "One China" policy on his call with Xi.

The White House called the phone discussion - which came on the eve of Trump's slated meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe - "extremely cordial", saying the leaders "look forward to further talks with very successful outcomes".

Following up on Thursday's letter with a lengthy phone call on Friday, Mr Trump "agreed to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in trade and economy, investment as well as global affairs", China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

Trump also thanked Xi for a congratulatory letter on his election to the presidency and to express his hopes of developing "a constructive relationship that benefits both the United States and China".

In 1980, then presidential candidate Ronald Reaganvowed to support diplomatic ties to Taiwan, but "one China" continued under his presidency.

US President Donald Trump has agreed to honour the "One-China" policy weeks after he said he did not feel "bound" by the agreement. But, for now at least, the American government will recognize one, and only one, government of China, and its President Xi.

China lodged a formal complaint with the USA after that comment, but now it appears the presidents are putting their differences aside.

During the phone conversation, Trump said he fully understands the high significance of the US government's pursuit of the one-China policy, adding that the USA government adheres to the one-China policy.

Trump and President Xi Jinping of China had a lengthy telephone conversation on Thursday evening. "To adhere to the one-China policy ... is a responsibility that the USA government should fulfil", Lu said, adding that China "appreciates" Trump's pledge to uphold the policy. But the US isn't necessarily "bound" by it; it's more like the USA has agreed not to meddle.
