Orange alligator spotted in SC turning heads

Gators typically shed their skin, so the orange color is expected to eventually peel. According to the Post and Courier, commentators discussed how the alligator got its colour.

"I just thought, 'What the hell is that?'" Tatum said.

- No one seems to know why there's an orange alligator in a pond near Charleston, but it is becoming a popular neighborhood attraction.

That's because there have been recent sightings of a tangerine-colored alligator in SC.

"Representin' that Clemson National Championship", one person wrote in the post.

It's unclear why the gator has the odd, Doritos-like color, although one expert speculated its non-natural color could be due to an "environmental factor", like a pollutant or algae.

"It's a handsome looking animal but its definitely not a natural color for an alligator".

"Algae - maybe some pollutant in the water, but it's hard to say unless the water is tested", he said.

HANAHAN, S.C. -The Palmetto State is home to many alligators, but only one has recently managed to turn heads and become an overnight viral sensation. "It may be using a rusty steel culvert pipe".

Earlier this week, the gator was photographed basking on the bank near a pond, its bright orange skin standing out in sharp contrast to the patchy brown grass.
